The inshore fishing has been good this past week, especially early morning with catches of redfish, flounder, and a few speckled trout.

The redfish bite has been really good. We have been catching the reds back in the creeks, schooled up on the flats, and in deeper water along shelly bottoms in the lower Cape Fear. Double digit days have been common. Topwater plugs are working well early mornings with jigs and live bait working for the most part of the day.

We have also been catching some nice flounder and a few speckled trout on some of the same artificials and live baits that the reds have been hitting. The sheephead are also biting well on live fiddler crabs.

September fishing is right around the corner with speckled trout normally providing us with a lot of action with live shrimp and artificials. Flounder and redfish should be here in good numbers also. Check out the photos from this past week.

Thanks,

The inshore fishing has been good on most days with catches of speckled trout, red drum, flounder, spanish mackerel, and sheephead.

We have caught some really nice redfish up to 36″ lately on the flats and marsh edges of the lower Cape Fear. There were a couple of days that we hooked and caught some of the largest reds that I have seen in less than two feet of water. The reds have been caught by sightcasting and blindcasting topwater plugs, spinner baits, and soft plastics along marsh edges and oyster rocks. They have also been caught by fishing float rigs and bottom rigs baited with live minnows and live shrimp.

We have also been catching some flounder, speckled trout, and sheephead. The flounder and speckled trout have been caught using live bait and artificials. The sheephead have been caught by using live fiddler crabs. The spanish mackerel bite has also been good within a half of a mile of the beach. Check out some of the photos from this past week.

Thanks,

The redfish bite has been solid with most of the fish around the 26 to 27 inch mark. Sightcasting to these fish in a foot of water is some of the funnest fishing you can do inshore. We have been catching the reds by sightcasting and blindcasting artificials. We are also fishing live baits on float rigs and carolina rigs around the marsh edges and shelly bottoms in the creeks and bays of the lower Cape Fear river.

We have been catching some nice flounder and speckled trout on jigs and live baits. We are picking up the flounder and specs at some of the same spots we are catching the reds. The sheephead bite has also been good and double digit days on these tasty fish have been common. The spanish mackerel fishing has been good right of of the beach.

Check out the photos from the past couple of weeks. These are just a few of the good catches we have had lately.

Redfish, Flounder, Speckled Trout, Black Drum = Good Inshore Fishing !!!

The inshore fishing has been good lately with catches of red drum, black drum, speckled trout, flounder, sheephead, small and large bluefish.

We have had a blast fishing for redfish this past week. The reds have been schooled up on the flats, around marsh edges, shellbeds, and dock pilings. Double digit days have been common and most of the fish have been slot sized with a few drag screaming over the slot fish mixed in. The reds are being caught by sightcasting and blindcasting soft plastics, topwater plugs, and by fishing live baits on float rigs and carolina rigs. We are also picking a few speckled trout and flounder, and have hooked some large blues weighing up to 10lbs while fishing for the reds.

The speckled trout bite has turned on in the Cape Fear river. The specks are hitting soft plastic shrimp imatations, jigs, live menhaden, and live shrimp on float rigs. The flounder fishing has also been good around the Carolina Beach Inlet, Snow’s Cut, and in the river. We have also caught some good numbers of nice black drum, and picked up a few sheephead in the lower Cape Fear. The spanish mackerel fishing has been good right off the beach.

June is a shaping up to be great month for a inshore slam {redfish, flounder, and speckled trout}. Check out the photos from the past couple of weeks. It has been very rewarding watching my customers catch some nice fish and seeing the smiles on the kids faces when they catch a nice fish on light tackle.

The inshore fishing has been fair lately with the exception of redfish on the flats which has been good when we can catch the conditions right. The reds are schooled up in the shallow bays and hitting topwaters and soft plastics. We are also catching redfish blindcasting artificials around oyster rocks and shellbeds and by fishing live menhaden, mud minnows, finger mullet, and shrimp around docks, rockpiles and other structure.

The flounder bite has improved over the past week with some nice fish being caught in the Cape Fear River. We are catching the flounder with live menhaden on carolina rigs and picking up a few while blindcasting artificials for the redfish.

We are also catching a few speckled trout, sheephead, black drum, and large blues. The spanish are right off the beach and we will be fishing for them when the ocean is calm enough. Check out the photos from the past few weeks. These are just a few of the fish that my customers have caught lately.

Thanks,

The inshore and nearshore fishing is heating up with catches of red drum, black drum, speckled trout, flounder, sheephead, spanish mackerel and bluefish.

We have been catching good numbers of red drum around docks, oyster rocks, and by sightcasting to some nice schools on the flats. Most of the reds are in the slot with a few that have been nice drag screaming over the slot fish. The reds have been caught by sightcasting and blindcasting artificials, mud minnows on jigheads, float rigs with live minnows, and carolina rigs with fresh shrimp.

The black drum are still being caught by fishing carolina rigs baited with fresh shrimp around docks, rock piles, and oyster rocks. The speckled trout bite has been off, but should improve in May. Flounder and sheephead are also starting to make a showing and that should also start to improve over the next couple of weeks.

The spanish mackerel are right off of the beach and small and large blues are both inshore and nearshore. There will be some great sightcasting to these these fish when the conditions are right.

My son Christian hooked a tailing 10lb bluefish by sightcasting an artificial in a foot of water. He lost the fish boat side after a couple of long runs and two jumps. He was using a Shimano Stradic 1000 spinning reel spooled with 6lb braid and 6? Shimano Compre rod. I guess we’ll call it a catch since he didn’t have a dipnet.

There are going to be some good fishing oppurtunities over the next few weeks with the variety of fish the Cape Fear waters have to offer. Check out the photos from the past couple of weeks. These are are just a few of the good catches we have had lately.

The inshore fishing has been good over the past couple of weeks with catches of black drum, red drum, virginia mullet, and speckled trout. There are also a few bluefish and sheephead starting to show up. The spanish mackerel and flounder should move in over the next couple of weeks.

We have been catching good numbers of black drum around docks and rock piles using carolina rigs baited with fresh shrimp. Twenty to thirty fish days have been common. We are also catching a few nice reds mixed in with the blacks.

We are also catching a few speckled trout in the Cape Fear river on jigs, artificial shrimp imitations under a popping float, and live shrimp on a float rig. The trout fishing has been tough in the wide open Cape Fear due to the high winds we have lately. We should be able to catch some nice specs on the days when the wind cooperates. We are also picking a few redfish mixed in with the specs.

The shallow water redfishing has also been tough due to the winds. I am sure the fish are there we just need the winds to lay down so we can find the fish. Sightcasting and blindcasting artificials and live bait on float rigs and carolina rigs will be the way to go for the reds.

If the weather will cooperate we should have some great fishing over the next couple of weeks. Check out some of the photos from the past couple of weeks. These are just a few of the good catches we have had lately.

The warmer weather is finally starting to bring the water temps up and the fish are responding. The inshore fishing picking up with catches of speckled trout, redfish, blackdrum, sea mullet, and even a flounder or two. It is not uncommon to catch to catch red drum, black drum, and speckled trout all in one trip.

We are catching red and black drum around structure like dock pilings and rock piles. The bait of choice is fresh shrimp on carolina rigs or jig heads. The black drum are nice fish two to five pounds. The reds are mixed in size, just under the slot with a few slot fish mixed in. There are also some schools of reds on the flats, around shellbeds and oyster rocks. We are catching the schooling reds by sigthcasting and blindcasting artificials and live mud minnows on light jigheads.

We are starting to catch a few speckled trout and the numbers and size should get better as the water warms. Spring is the time to catch large specs in the Cape Fear area. The specs are hitting Doa and Gulp shrimp imitations and of course live shrimp when available.

The sea mullet are in the lower Cape Fear river. These tasty fish can sometimes be caught two at a time by fishing two hook bottom rigs with fresh shrimp Forty and fifty fish days are not uncommon.

I think we have finally turned the corner on the inshore fishing. Check out the photos from the past couple of weeks.

The reds are on the flats and around shellbed points and oyster rocks. All of the fish have been caught by sightcasting and blind casting artificials.

It looks like the temps are going to get back to normal for a few days after this cold snap. Hopefully there will be some good redfishing for the next week or so. The fish are there we just need the right temperature and winds to get them to bite. I should have a better redfishing report for the next couple of weeks. Check out the photos from the past couple of weeks.

December has been an oustanding month for redfish. January is looking like it may do the same, as long as the water temps stay in the mid 50’s.

The redfish seem to be everywhere, around structure, docks, shellbeds, oyster rocks, and on the flats. We are catching the reds on artificials, except for around the docks, where we are using live mud minnows on carolina rigs. There are lots of nice schools {50 to 100 fish} on the flats. Sightcasting to these fish in less than a foot of water is an absolute blast on light tackle. When you hook a 25? to 30? fish and watch the rest of the school erupt, is a sight to see. We have had many double hookups when we find the redfish schooled up on the flats.

There are also some speckled trout and striped bass in the upper parts of the Cape Fear river. I have also heard some good reports of redfish and large whiting in the surf on Masonboro Island.

The next couple of weeks is looking like it maybe a good time to get out on the water to do some fishing. There are lots of days when we only see one or two more boats on the water. Check out some of the photos from the past couple of weeks. These are just a few of the good catches we have had lately.

Thanks, Jeff Wolfe
