Topsail & Surf City Outdoors-Fishing Report 3-23-09

March 24th, 2009 by SFTC Press

Hi folks, Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report. Things are looking up folks! Reds are in the surf and at the north end of Lea Island. If you can get outside on a calm day you can run the surf just outside the breakers and find some big schools of fish. Folks this is extreme fishing because one guy has to stay on the wheel and run the boat. Toss a Gulp bait at them and hang on! the reds are also getting fired up in the sound as the water warms up. Look for Specks in the deep holes and along dropoff’s. Gulp bait on a jig or a Billy Bait Halo Shrimp will work wonders on a hungry Trout. Find the warmest water you can and look for fish laying around sunning.
Offshore the Stream is giving up wahoo and tuna and the Grouper in in the 10-15 mile range. Black bass are starting to show up in the 5 mile range and the Bonita should be making their presence known soon.
April 4th is youth turkey day and April 11th is fun for everybody. The season runs till May 9th so get out there and bag a longbeard. If you don’t have any private land to hunt just head for one of the game lands in the area. All of them have birds but the hunting can be hard. Hey if it was easy it wouldn’t be fun!
Remember to check out the local tackle shops and get your gear in order. These folks know their business and know whats biting and where. They can hook you up with all you need to catch a mess of fish! Well that’s it for this week so remember to be safe and take a kid with you!

Topsail & Surf City Outdoors-Fishing Report 3-16-09

March 16th, 2009 by SFTC Press

Hi folks, Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report. Not much is going on folks and I ain’t going to lie to you. The Yellowfin are in the gulfstream along with Wahoo too. The water is warming up so it won’t be long for the rest of us. Now is the time to make sure all your stuff is ready because when it happens you don’t want to be on the hill! Turkey season is coming in on April 11th till May 9th and youth day is April 4th. We are lucky to have huntable populations of birds in all 100 county’s in North Carolina. Don’t have a good spot then check out the abundance of state run game lands in the area. Holly Shelter, Bladen Lakes and Croatan National Forest all have birds. Be careful because other hunters may be in the area and a hunting accident ain’t a good way to start the season.
This weekend is the 1st Annual Cape Fear Wildlife Expo, downtown at the Coastline Convention Center and the Schwartz Center. Over 100 exhibitors are expected to showcase hunting, fishing and other products and services for outdoorsmen and women. Bring the whole family and check it out! I’ll be there and so should you. Saturday, March 21st from 9:00am-8:00pm and the 22nd from 9:00am-5:00pm. Well thats it for this week so remember to be safe and take a kid with you!
