Headhunter Outdoors Report

Hi folks, Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report. Well what can I say,the fish are biting and hunting season is in! That makes me very happy. Folks if you ain’t fishin’ or huntin’ now your priorities are messed up. The Flounder bite is really good now and the Reds are everywhere. I’ve been hearing of some small spots being caught from the piers and surf now and along the waterway too. It shouldn’t be long before the run begins. The Trout bite is still on up in the river as well. Folks this time of the year the fish are trying to get fattened up for the winter when food is scarce. A fat Menhaden or Finger mullet around a creek mouth is a recipe for success. You folks probably wonder why I keep telling you to fish the creek mouth’s, so here’s the scoop. Now fish ain’t amongst the smartest creatures ever created but they recognize an easy meal when they see it. The current running through the mouth of a creek usually creates a hole and a sand or mud flat around it. Baitfish have a hard time swimming in the current so they get swept through the opening. All the larger predator fish such as Flounder,Trout,and Redfish have to do is wait for the current to deliver the next meal. The Flounder will be in the hole and around the edges,and the Reds will be up on the flat. The Trout could be anywhere in the area just cruising around. Heck there is no telling what will bite! The biggest mistake I see people making is fishing out in the middle of the waterway. You can catch fish there but the big fish are along the bank waiting on a school of bait to swim by. If you are riding down the water and see a bunch of bait trying to get out of the water, something is chasing them so stop and see what is causing the commotion. Could be nothing or it could be your new honeyhole.
Offshore is still the same when the seas are calm enough for folks to get out. The Kings are still around and the bottom fish are biting too. Most of the reports I’m getting are sketchy and 3rd hand so who knows how reliable it is! You know all fishermen are liars, don’t you! How else could a 8 ounce spot be 1 1/2 pounds 2 days latter?
I had a great charter the other day with a father and son from up around D.C. somewhere and we had a ball! Little Nick was 4 years old and wanted to go fishing with his dad. Dad was a little worried that Nick couldn’t take all day in the boat but Nick showed him! That boy put a 27 inch Redfish in the boat and backed it up with 2 more in the 21-23 inch range. I really don’t know who was more excited him for catching those fish or his dad for seeing his boy catch them. That boy is going to grow up to be a fine young man.

Well on to the hunting side. Deer 3- Capt. David 0. I went Wednesday and had 2 deer come in on me and I couldn’t get a shot,then on Saturday I had 3 walk in on me and couldn’t get a shot. No meat for the freezer yet! Sooner or later I’ll get one folks. Heck I’ve already seen more deer this year than I did all season last year. Oh well thats the way it goes sometimes.
