Headhunter Outdoors Report 8-13-07

August 13th, 2007 by SFTC Press

Hi folks, Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report. The fish are biting everywhere folks. The reds are thick in the sound and in the surf. The south end of the island and Lea island seem to be consistent hotspots now for some big Redfish from the surf. Bring some good tackle because some of these fish are BIG! The surf is also giving up Black drum,Pompano, and Flounder on occasion. Back in the skinny water the Ladyfish are all along the waterway now. Called the Poor mans Tarpon because of it’s fighting ability and aerial displays, they are a blast on light tackle or fly rod. They don’t get real big and they ain’t fit to eat but are fun as heck to catch. If you can find a lighted dock at nite you might catch one. Some really nice Flounder are around the docks along Banks Channel and the waterway docks too. A fat Finger mullet or Pogey thrown up along a dock will more than likely get hammered in short order. Who knows you might find Mr. Redfish in the shade as well. Heck as hot as it’s been lately I want to be in the shade too. Folks be careful as hot as it has been! The combination of the sun and the water will dehydrate you in a hurry. Drink plenty of fluids and I ain’t talking about beer. Thats the worst thing for you on the water, not to mention operating a boat while drinking is against the law as well.
Offshore it’s been lots of the same, Kings everywhere, a few Tarpon are still hanging out, Grouper on the ledges, and sailfish on the structure 5-8 miles out. You might find some Mahi as well.
Now if You really want some good advise and are new to the area or just on vacation.Go check out the local bait and tackle shops. The folks at any of the places around here will be glad to share information and get you set up with the right tackle to catch whatever you are after. These people are locals who fish! Take a little time and check them out during the heat of the day. Well thats it for this week folks. Be safe and take a kid fishing!

Headhunter Outdoors Report 8-6-07

August 6th, 2007 by SFTC Press

Hi folks Capt. David with this weeks outdoors report. The fish are biting! What more can I say? Offshore or inshore you can certainly catch a mess of fish now. If it’s listed on the NCDMF sheet it’s biting. I really don’t know what else to tell you folks but,Go Fishing! Piers, surf, offshore trolling or inshore everything is HOT now. If you ain’t catching fish move! Sometimes moving a few hundred feet is all it takes folks.

I can’t really express how good the fish are biting or what to use to catch them because it’s so good! So I’ll get around to the other side. Hunting season is starting soon and you guys and girls need to have your mess together. Deer season starts Sept. 8 and Dove season comes in Labor day weekend. I’m so HAPPY! Bow hunters, you need to be practicing. Dove hunters, Buy shells and get some skeet shooting practice in. Check your tree stands and safety harness before opening day. If you have feeders out, fill them up and stick a game camera close by it. Go ahead and get the preparations out of the way early. Last minute stuff is aggravating so do it early.

Wash your clothes and hang them so the scent is gone before opening day. Don’t forget your pack either. Human scent is the one thing that will ruin a hunt,so git er done! I won’t have any pity for the fool that ain’t prepared and misses a shot at a big buck in velvet on opening day. The funny thing is,it will happen! Well thats it for this week so be safe and take a kid with you!
