Headhunter Outdoors Report 8-13-07
August 13th, 2007 by SFTC PressHi folks, Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report. The fish are biting everywhere folks. The reds are thick in the sound and in the surf. The south end of the island and Lea island seem to be consistent hotspots now for some big Redfish from the surf. Bring some good tackle because some of these fish are BIG! The surf is also giving up Black drum,Pompano, and Flounder on occasion. Back in the skinny water the Ladyfish are all along the waterway now. Called the Poor mans Tarpon because of it’s fighting ability and aerial displays, they are a blast on light tackle or fly rod. They don’t get real big and they ain’t fit to eat but are fun as heck to catch. If you can find a lighted dock at nite you might catch one. Some really nice Flounder are around the docks along Banks Channel and the waterway docks too. A fat Finger mullet or Pogey thrown up along a dock will more than likely get hammered in short order. Who knows you might find Mr. Redfish in the shade as well. Heck as hot as it’s been lately I want to be in the shade too. Folks be careful as hot as it has been! The combination of the sun and the water will dehydrate you in a hurry. Drink plenty of fluids and I ain’t talking about beer. Thats the worst thing for you on the water, not to mention operating a boat while drinking is against the law as well.
Offshore it’s been lots of the same, Kings everywhere, a few Tarpon are still hanging out, Grouper on the ledges, and sailfish on the structure 5-8 miles out. You might find some Mahi as well.
Now if You really want some good advise and are new to the area or just on vacation.Go check out the local bait and tackle shops. The folks at any of the places around here will be glad to share information and get you set up with the right tackle to catch whatever you are after. These people are locals who fish! Take a little time and check them out during the heat of the day. Well thats it for this week folks. Be safe and take a kid fishing!
