Headhunter Outdoors Report 7-16-07

July 16th, 2007 by SFTC Press

Hi folks, Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report. Folks the fishing is HOT! Inside or outside,Whatever you are after, it’s biting.
Offshore the Kings are tearing it up. Folks are catching them from the piers and boaters are catching them from the surf on out. The Mahi are as close as 5-8 miles and are hitting trolled Ballyhoo and anything esle you troll. Several folks in the area have gotten lucky and caught a sailfish while King fishing. I’ve heard of some Tarpon around and there is always a Barracuda hanging around the local reefs. Speaking of reefs, the Black bass and snappers are all over the rockpiles and ledges. The farther out and deeper you go some nice Grouper are being caught. I’ve also heard of some guys catching some 40+ pound drum on downriggers while trolling for kings.
Inshore the big Red drum are in the ocean at Lea Island. I’ve seen a couple caught that were in the 20 pound size and most of them are way over the slot limit anyway. It’s a total catch and release fishery but it’s a heck of a lot of fun! Back in the sound and along the waterway the Reds of all sizes are everywhere. If you ain’t catching them where you are fishing,MOVE! The small creeks coming into the waterway is the place to look for a big spot-tail. Now don’t overlook those small little creeks that are just 4 feet wide. One creek I know like that has a big school of Reds that feed ther on the falling tide, every day! Some better size Flounder are showing up too. Fish the deep holes and along ledges to find them.Docks along the waterway and Banks Channel are also good spots for a big Flounder to hang out. They like the shade and structure they provide not to mention the bait that usually is hanging around. Folks the biggest mistake I see people making when they fish around here is that they fish too deep. Look at the schools of bait. 90% of the bait is up next to the bank. Common sense will tell you that the fish ain’t far from the food source. Most of the fish I catch on Charters come from 3 feet of water or less. My best advise is get a good cast net, learn to use it, and go catch some big fish with the bait you get.
On the hunting side, September ain’t far off boys and girls. Time to get the bow out and get practiced up, Clean the shotgun and check your gear. Most of the sporting goods retailers will be having sales before the seasons come in. Trying to find something at the last minute is aggravating as a loose hoe handle. Remember the 6 p’s. Proper Perparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance! Safety should be of the utmost importance as well. Check your stand and get a safety harness. Replace any worn or broken equipment as well. It’s a lot cheaper than a hospital bill! Hey thats a good one to tell the wife. Well thats it for this week folks. Be safe and take a kid fishing! Capt. David

Headhunter Outdoors Report 7-9-07

July 9th, 2007 by SFTC Press

Hi folks,Capt.David here with this weeks outdoors report. Boy are the fish biting! If you ain’t catchin’ fish now you have got to be doing something wrong. Inshore and offshore everything is hot. The Kings are everywhere from the beach on out. They are catching them from the piers as well. Folks we ain’t talking little Kings either. The Dolphin are anywhere from 5-6 miles on out. I’ve heard a lot are coming from weed lines about 10-15 miles out. This time of the year Mr. Sailfish is in the neighborhood as well. Dallas rock and any of the ledges or rockpiles 8-10 miles out is a good place to start looking. The small boat folks like me should rejoice in the fact that some serious big game fish are in our reach for the next few months. I love the summers here!
Inshore, what can I say. The Redfish are thick as hair on a dogs back and are hitting artificials and live bait like a Mack truck. Any of the creek mouths along the waterway is a good place to start. The key seems to be a lot of water flow and bait in the area. These fish are in 1-2 feet of water folks! If you are fishing in 3 feet of water the Pinfish will tear you up. Throw your finger mullet up next to the grass or shell bar, thats where the big fish are folks. If you don’t believe me, keep doing it your way. The Flounder are up next to the grass as well. Some keeper size fish are being caught but the doormats have been scarce this year. The creeks up along the New river are loaded with Specks, just find a deep hole and QUIETLY float a live shrimp in it. Oh by the way, hang on when you do! Well as you can probably tell I’m excited about things now. So I gotta go fishing folks! Remember to obey the limits and be safe, and take a kid fishing for crying out loud. Thats it for this week folks,Tight lines and screaming drags to everyone! Capt. David
