Hi folks, Capt. David with this weeks outdoors report. What do you want to know? Thats right, where the fish are biting at. The answer to that is, Everywhere! Folks the best way to catch a fish now is to wet a hook. No matter what species is your favorite to catch, they’re biting.
Back in the sound the Reds are biting pretty good around the small creek mouths along the waterway. Live menhaden or shrimp are the best bait to use now. Some nice Specks are being caught around the Sneads Ferry bridge on live shrimp under a float. Early morning and late evening seems to be the best times. More flounder are moving and they are getting bigger. Try any structure around the inlet area. Docks, drop-offs along the channel, oyster bars and creek mouths are great spots to look for a big flattie.
Offshore, the Kings are 5-10 miles out and are being caught on the piers now. Lots of Spanish and Blues are tearing up Clark spoons too. The Cobia are here as well and are being caught on the piers too. Whatever you do, if you catch one don’t bring it into the boat before it’s worn out and then get out of it’s way when you do! They are known for going crazy and tearing up a boat when landed.
The surf is giving up some nice Reds and Black Drum and some Pompano are being caught as well. Heck everything that swims is biting now so just go fishing. Remember that they call it fishing! Not catching!
Check with your favorite bait and tackle shops for the best baits and places to fish. Now that school is getting out, Take the kids fishing and be safe. Thats it for this week folks, NOW GO FISHING! Capt. David

Hi folks Capt. David with this weeks outdoors report. The fish are biting better every day. I’ve been catching a few nice Reds along the waterway and some huge blues. The Flounder are picking up around the inlets. Try Strip baits if you can’t find any pogeys or finger mullet. Some nice Trout are being caught up in the creeks along the New river. It’s mainly an early morning or late evening bite. Look in the back of the creeks for schools of menhaden, if you catch some in the 3-4 inch size that’s perfect. If they are bigger you can always use them for cut bait and chum. Everything will eat Menhaden! I like to rig one rod with a float and a small king rig type setup and a big menhaden then chunk it out into deep water and see what happens. Heck I’ve caught big Spanish and Cobia in the waterway. That’s what I love about fishing around here, there ain’t no telling whats liable to be on the other end of that rod thats bent over in the rodholder. The offshore game has been kind of off because of the weather that blew through the last few days. I know the fish are out there at the usual hotspots so let’s wait the weather out and then go find something. Huh!
The Coast Guard has pulled the buoys from Topsail creek channel so be careful going through there. I don’t have a problem with my Skiff but some of you folks with big boats, be careful it has shoaled up some at the other end. Everybody needs to remember that the water changes all the time and the changes we see on a day to day basis are ignored. Over the winter those shortcuts and creeks have filled up and the channel has changed. Take it easy the first couple of times and find the water before you go all out.
Well folks thats about all I’ve got for this week so take a kid fishing folks. Capt. David
