Headhunter Outdoors Report

Hi folks Capt. David with this weeks outdoors report. The fish are biting! The surf is giving up some nice Drum, Red and Black. The mullet are still around,Blues are everywhere,and who knows what else is liable to bite a hook. Back in the sound the Reds are getting real active and bait is appearing as well. Peanut pogeys are back in the creeks but are scattered. Now if you don’t know what a peanut pogey is, it’s a 3-4 inch Menhaden. Just the right size for bait on a Carolina rig. Flounder, Reds and Blues love them and about anything that eats other fish will hit them. The easiest way to find them is to look for them flipping on the surface of the water. Then throw your cast net on them. Now don’t get greedy because it is easy to overload your livewell and they will die on you. Lip hook them and throw them up next to the bank and hang on. I have caught just about everything that swims on them, and they make good chum when they die. Chop up a few and throw them in the water so that the oil in them creates a scent trail for them big fish to follow to your hook.
Offshore the King Mackeral are about 12 to 15 miles out and the Cobia are showing up as well. The Spanish are out just past the surf and will tear up a Clark spoon trolled on a planer. The bottom fishing is getting good with a lot of Black Sea Bass on the nearshore reefs and hard bottom areas a couple of miles out. The grouper are still on the reefs and rock piles further out. It shouldn’t be long before the Tarpon show up as well. Yes folks we have Tarpon around here! Seeing a school of silver kings rolling on the surface is an unbelievable sight and they love Pinfish. Trim the spines off and use a big circle hook, then just toss it in front of them and hang on. Any tackle suitable for Kings will work on a Tarpon. Just add a heavy mono leader about 6 feet long instead of wire. I get excited this time of the year because the variety of fish available to us is just mindboggling and I love to fish! Heck hunting season is out so what else is there to do till September. Another thing to do is check out your equipment before you head to the boat ramp.Make sure the motor runs,the batteries are charged and all your safety equipment is in good order. The last thing you want is to get the boat to the ramp and have problems. Not only will you get aggravated but a lot of other people will get mad at you jamming up the ramp when its crowded. I even go down to the ramp sometimes just to watch the confusion, it can be hilarious at times. Be patient and try to help folks having trouble. Remember what goes around, comes around!
