Hi folks Capt. David with this weeks outdoors report. I’m hearing reports of some Virginia mullet showing up in the surf now and some decent reds in the surf as well. Back in the sound the Speckled trout are being caught in the deep holes back in the creeks and the Redfish are beginning to get with the program as well. It looks like we are going to have a good spring for fishing this year so I hope your gear is ready. The Berkeley Gulp baits are what seems to be working the best for both Trout and Drum now so stock up on them.

Offshore the action is heating up as well. The Big Rock is holding some nice Yellowfin in the 30-35 lb class and the grouper are out past 30 miles. It shouldn’t be long till the Bonita show up too. I can’t wait and I hope they show in greater numbers than last year. They ain’t worth a hoot for eating but they are a blast to catch and are usually in range of small boats. The Liberty ship reef off Wrightsville is a hotspot every year. Just be careful if you plan on going outside,it can get rough in a hurry!

I was talking to the Marine Fisheries Officers that work our area last week and they told me to remind you folks about the saltwater license this year. I know a lot of folks don’t like it but it is a fact of life now,so get yours beforeyou go fishing. I think they just don’t want to do the paperwork of writing tickets. I also talked to our local Wildlife officer and he said that there were a few new regulations that you folks need to know about. He’s getting me a list this week and I will have it for next weeks column.

Let’s talk about another fine business this week. Eastern Outfitters on Hwy210 in Hampstead. Folks if you can’t find it there I don’t know where you can find it. Hunting, Fishing, and any other type of outdoor sports you can enjoy they can fix you up with the gear. High quality merchandise and helpful employee’s make this a great place to go find the things you need. They carry a complete line-up of handguns and longguns, ammo, bows, stands, decoys, fishing gear, trailer parts, and clothing. If you can catch it or hunt it they have the right stuff. Stop in and check them out and tell them I sent you.

Well thats it for this week, so remember, Be safe and take a kid with you. Capt. David
