Hi folks, It’s time for this weeks outdoors report. Well I think that spring may have finally sprung! These warm days we are getting now should start warming the water and some fishes attitudes. I’ve heard of a few Trout and Redfish being caught but it’s still extremely hard to find some that are willing to bite. Try prospecting deep holes near an oyster bar or mudflat. The sun will warm these area’s up quicker than deep water and a couple of degrees is all it takes to put the fish in a feeding mood.
Offshore nothing much is happening unless you go to the Gulfstream. A few wahoo and yellowfin are being caught out there by a few brave souls. If you plan on making the run, check the weather forecast and be careful. Hypothermia ain’t funny and a dip this time of the year is a good way to get yourself killed. Hypothermia can set in as quick as a couple of minutes with the water temps in the high 50’s as it is now. Heck even back in the sound it can happen just as quick! All it takes is getting wet.
Well hunting season for everything will be out by the time you read this so all we have to look forward to is spring Turkey season. NC Wildlife Resources Commision says that we have turkeys in every county in the state now so we should’nt have to far to go to get a longbeard this year. Get your calls out and start practicing, swap out that duck hunting choke for that extra full master blaster choke and go pattern that jewel.
This weeks shameless plug for our local businesses that cater to sportsmen and women is for Danny’s Pawn and Sports in Hampstead. Danny, his son Daniel, and Ron are some of the nicest folks you will ever meet. They are always willing to give you some helpful tips on whats biting and where a good place to hunt is. You might even hear a story or two. Most of the time when they ain’t suffering at work they are out there somewhere hunting or fishing. They have a nice selection of handguns and long guns. They also carry ammo for just about everything that shoots, from muzzleloading supplies to the latest in high-powered rifle ammo, calls, scents, and other assorted knicknacks and dodads for the outdoorsman. Hey they have some nice stuff on the pawn shop side too. Stop in and check them out the next time you go down 17 through Hampstead. Tell’em Capt. David sent you! On second thought don’t do that, they might run you off!
I would like to remind you folks to send in your photo’s of your fish and game. Hey it’s good to let everyone see your success. I would also like to let a certain charter customer and friend know that he ain’t called his old buddy Capt. David in a while and I need to hear a good story or two! Now if you can’t figure out who I’m talking about I’m trying to protect his identity.
Well thats it for this week folks so remember, be safe and take a kid with you!
Capt. David
