Hi folks, Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report. Well I won’t lie to you folks, things are really slowing down now that it’s gotten cold! Now I don’t know about you folks but it’s been too cold for my blood the last week and the fish ain’t liking it either. There still some Speckled trout around and the Red drum are still biting as well. Everything seems to be happening in the surf but thats not to say you can’t find a hungry fish back in the sound. If you can stand the weather and can find some water thats a couple of degrees warmer than the average water temps in the area, you might find a hungry fish or two. My personal advise to those of you who ain’t “hardcore” fisherman is to get ready for next spring.
Those rods and reels you used all summer without a problem will be a problem in the spring. Sitting in the garage all winter with the salt residue on them will lock them up tighter than a bank vault. Remember salt water will rust rubber! Clean and lube your tackle now or come spring you will be at the tackle shop replacing it. If you are not mechanicially inclined take it to the tackle shop and have them clean it for you for a small fee. While you’re at it go ahead and get some new line for it. I replace my line about 3 times a year due to the amount of time and abuse I put on my tackle. I don’t mind losing a fish due to a pulled hook but breaking the line makes me mad as heck.
While you’re at it don’t forget the boat. Wash and clean it, flush the motor, Put some fuel stabilizer in the gas tank and cover it up. This is also the time of the year to have any maintenance done as well. The guys at the boat shop hate it when they sit on their butts all winter and the first warm day of spring everybody has to have their boat fixed now! If you are one of those folks guess what? It ain’t happening like that! As a retired mechanic I will tell you a few bucks spent on maintenance will save you a lot of money in the long run too. By the way everyone knows what boat stands for don’t you? B.O.A.T. Break Out Another Thousand. With the price of boats and motors these days they are an investment worth taking care of. While it’s at the shop have them ck the wheel bearings and springs too. fix it now or be sitting on the side of the road come spring.
Well duck season is out till Saturday and Deer season is still in. Why have’nt any of you sent in a picture of a big buck this year, I know somebody out there has killed a wallhanger this year. A lot of folks have sent in pictures throughout the year but I’m getting tired of having to put the world famous Leon Phelps in the paper every week with his latest trophy. Boy is his taxidermist going to be busy this year. If anybody is looking for a good taxidermist I highly recommend that you contact Chris Lee at Bowed-up taxidermy to take care of your Deer or Duck mounting. His number is 910-270-9929 or 910-231-2464. This guy does amazing work at a reasonable price and is a true wildlife artist.
Well thats about it for this week so remember to take a kid with you and be safe while you’re at it! Capt. David
